As a new breed of Chinese companies, especially tech companies, are building new payment channels for international transactions, legislators and local competitors are starting to get nervous, as seen most recently in the attempt to ban WeChat Pay in the US.

Tech giants like Alibaba and Tencent have created “parallel banking systems” to serve China’s 1.4 billion population, where digital wallet usage has surpassed the previously dominant credit card. While there is no doubt these FinTech services began by aiming to create greater customer convenience, the widespread use on the international stage has now changed the future of consumerism.
